The chain ranking answers where liquidity sits by ecosystem. The protocol ranking answers which venues hold that liquidity. Reading both together separates chain-level depth from venue-level concentration.
TVL is useful because it is open, comparable, and current. It cannot prove new users arrived, and it cannot separate fresh deposits from token-price movement by itself. Bathymark keeps that caveat visible.
